Fiala will serve 25 years for the murder of a couple over a villa in Prague |
Tomáš Fiala has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the double murder related to a villa in Prague's Bubenča. The Constitutional Court (ÚS) rejected his appeal, as reported by ČTK from the court's database. Jiří Nehyba, who was also involved and received a five-year sentence for related fraud, also filed a complaint, but the decision on his appeal is not yet available in the database.
Fiala continues to maintain his innocence, arguing that there is no direct evidence incriminating him and that the circumstances of the incident remain unclear. However, the constitutional judges found the conclusions drawn by the lower courts to be logical and supported by the presented evidence.
The resolution emphasized that the absence of direct evidence does not automatically imply the innocence of the appellant. In this case, a substantial chain of circumstantial evidence exists, which the appellant's incidental objections, already addressed by the lower courts, do not undermine.

As per the final verdict, Fiala and Nehyba sought to acquire a historic villa valued at over 20 million crowns, owned by a seventy-two-year-old woman, by falsifying documents. This attempt to seize the villa resulted in a homicide, which, according to the judgment, occurred in 2019 in Velká Paseka, Havlíčkobrodsk. In June 2019, Fiala rented a cottage in the area, where evidence suggestive of a crime scene was discovered despite meticulous cleaning. Mobile operator records indicated the presence of both Fiala and the deceased associate at the location.
Following the disappearance of the elderly couple, Fiala and Nehyba drove the deceased man's employer's car to the Hungarian city of Esztergom. Surveillance cameras captured their presence in the vehicle. Inside the car, traces of gasoline and cleaning agents were found, which the prosecution alleged were intended to conceal biological evidence.

The bodies of the murder victims were discovered in the Švihov water reservoir, weighed down by a concrete block and a block of granite, similar to those found at the cottage in Velká Paseka.
Initially, the case was handled by the Municipal Court in Prague. However, the High Court later determined that due to the crime scene in Havlíčkobrodsk, the case should have been under the jurisdiction of the court in Pardubice. As a result, the legal proceedings had to be restarted.
